Results of the ice diving season - 2021
So the ice diving season - 2021 has come to an end!
For a month and a half, more than 70 divers visited our dive center, nine people successfully completed the PADI Ice Diver course. Congratulations to ice divers — new and experienced! :)
January and February frosts provided good strength and thickness of ice by the beginning of the season. Back in mid-March, all dive sites were available, which is quite rare. But already on the 20th of March, warming began, and everything began to slowly melt. Sometimes the melted ice froze again, and a clear ice surface was almost like on a skating rink.
The base ice camp was, as usual, pitched near the Bolshoy Krestovy island. Some of the dives were performed right there, some involved trips to other dive sites. The trips were also to distant magnificent islands with wonderful places for diving - Kasyan, Cheremshiha and Kishkin.
In between dives, divers enjoyed Karelian nature and local cuisine. On the islands, they dined in fishing huts or in special mobile homes. Then, already at the base, we met sunsets, admired the northern lights after the Russian bath. During the rest days there were reindeers and dogs rides, excursions and gatherings around the campfire and mussels cooked on an open fire.
Also this year, two unique ice exhibitions were opened at the Polar Circle Dive Center: "Before the ice melt" - underwater photographs by Viktor Lyagushkin, and "Deep Freeze" - paintings and art objects by artist Denis Lotarev. The works of art located under the ice looked mysterious and amazing in the greenish underwater light, truly striking the imagination.
Thanks to all divers for interesting and safe dives! And special thanks to the instructors and all the employees of the Arctic Circle who provided ice diving in 2021! See you in the open water ;)
