Ice Diving Conditions

The White Sea freezes from December until April-May. The main ice diving period here is from the second half of February till the first half of April, because any earlier or any later there is no guarantee of solid ice to get to the best dive sites.

  • Water Visibility: 15–50m.
  • Water Temperature: from -0,5°C on the surface to -2°C at depth
  • Air Temperature: +5°C to -30°C
  • Thickness of Ice: up to 1.5m
  • Water Salinity: 27,5-28%
  • Diverse Underwater Terrain: vertical rocky walls or flat bottom areas
  • During periods of severe frost, dives can be made from a heated compartment placed over the maina (ice hole)

Equipment recommendations for winter period:

  • Dry suit (neoprene dry suits are highly recommended) to feel comfortable during a 40-minutes dive in cold water (about -1º/+1ºС)
  • Warm dry undergarments (we recommend you have two sets)
  • Two unfreezing regulators (with DIN/YOKE fitting), each having one first stage, one second stage (primary and alternate), SPG and low pressure inflator hose; the regulators should have been serviced just prior to the trip
  • BCD (preferably with integrated weight system)
  • Mask and fins
  • Gloves (three-finger mitts or dry gloves with rings are highly recommended)
  • Diving computer and a compass
  • Powerful torch, preferably rechargeable.

Outfit recommendations for winter period:

  • Warm underwear (two-layer or made of polartec) and 5 pairs of warm socks.
  • Warm sweater.
  • Warm waterproof shoes.
  • Warm anorak for cold weather (-30).
  • Warm cap covering the ears.
  • Sunglasses with a UV filter to protect the eyes in sunny days.
  • Lip care stick and cream to protect hands and face against cold and wind.

All diving equipment listed above can be rented at the Arctic Circle Dive Centre, but we recommend bringing your own kit, making sure you double check it before your trip.

High waterproof boots are also available upon request.

We provide for a dive a single scuba tank with a V-valve or a two-piece unit (a double scuba tank). Steel scuba tanks are preferrable, as you need fewer weights with them, since their buoyancy is less than that of aluminum ones.

Ice Diving Schedule and Arrangement

  • A mobile diving camp with heated cabins on diving sites
  • Diver transport to diving sites by snowmobile
  • Diving in pairs through the maina (ice-hole)
  • Safety ropes are used according to PADI standards

* Divers without the necessary experience can undertake a PADI Ice Diver Course at the Arctic Circle Dive Center. To enroll to the course one must be at least 18 years old and have a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Certification or equivalent. The course consists of 1–2 lectures and 3 training dives with an instructor. At the end of the course you will have to pass the exam and complete the necessary paperwork to obtain the Ice Diver Certificate. The course fee includes use of all the necessary equipment.

4. Health Requirements:

A diver must be in good physical and mental health. Any physical condition requiring special attention, diet, or treatment must be reported in writing when the reservation is made. The Arctic Circle Dive Center reserves the right to decline acceptance of any person as a member of a diving program.

A mobile diving camp is set up on diving sites. Heated wooden cabins on sledges are transported to the diving site in advance to provide shelter for changing and drying of equipment. One cabin typically houses a team of four divers. We also provide a common room module for comfortable lunch and socializing at the diving site, and a separate WC-cabin equipped with a chemical toilet. A heated wooden shelter can be placed just over the ice-hole (maina) for those who prefer to stay in a heated space between dives.

The day schedule begins at 8 a.m. with a substantial breakfast to provide divers with enough energy for the day on ice. A comprehensive briefing is conducted after the breakfast to provide information on diving sites, current weather conditions, water temperature and visibility, etc. After a break, all participating divers take snowmobile transport to the ice camp. Depending on the current location of ice camp, this journey may take from 20 minutes up to one hour.

Dives are made in pairs, with one pair of a four-person team diving while the other pair act as tenders on the surface. The first pair of divers usually enters the water within 30–40 minutes of arrival at the ice camp.

Dives are conducted through the maina (sawed rectangular or triangular entry hole in ice). Construction of the maina is the first task upon arrival at the camp. Dive centre staff usually prepare the maina, but divers taking the PADI Ice Dive Course must be able to construct it themselves.

Diving is performed in Dry Suits using a special diving technique. Safety ropes are used according to PADI standards under the guidance of experienced instructors and dive guides. The divers tie a safety rope around the waist and hold it in their palm after wrapping it around their hand. The tender person holds the rope at the surface while the other end of the rope is fixed to an ice-screw.

Around 2 p.m. lunch is delivered to the ice camp and everybody retreats to the common room module to eat and relax, and to share thoughts and impressions. The second diving session is scheduled for the afternoon and the return to the base is usually around 6 p.m.

 - любые вещи, расставание с которыми для вас невыносимо (несмотря на все усилия родителей и вожатых, дети все же иногда теряют или портят свои вещи);

- игровые мультимедийные средства (электронные игры в лагере разрешены только от отбоя до подъема);

- спички, зажигалки, свечи, пиротехнические средства;

- режущие и колющие предметы (опасные ножницы, ножи, спицы, опасные бритвы, рабочий инструмент);

- сигареты (в том числе электронные), табак и изделия из него, курительные принадлежности;

- алкогольные и иные спиртосодержащие напитки, энергетические напитки;

- нарядную одежду для вечерних мероприятий;

- репелленты (лучше в форме спреев или кремов; аэрозоль – порой довольно опасная в детских руках штука);

- нарядную одежду для вечерних мероприятий (для Рождественской программы пригодятся карнавальные костюмы, маски и проч.);

- личное снаряжение для зимних видов спорта, например, лыжи;

The Arctic Circle Dive Centre offers 3 variants of ice diving arrangement:

1. Diving in pairs for certified ice divers, accompanied by a dive centre guide. Certified ice divers are paired up to share a dive, and two pairs make a group of four for mutual co-operation and safety. The first pair is diving under the ice being attached to the safety rope, and the accompanying dive guide is attached to another rope. During this dive, the other pair of divers on the surface acts as tenders for the ones below, keeping the safety ropes of the first pair and the guide in their hands and exchanging special sygnals with them. After the first dive, the pairs replace each other.

2. Ice diving with the dive centre instructor within the PADI "Ice Diver" course, for certified divers who don't have the "Ice Diver" specialization. You need to be at least 18 years old and to have the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification level or equivalent to enroll to the course.

3. Introductory ice dive with a dive centre instructor, for certified divers who don't have the "Ice Diver" specialization and don't plan to take the appropriate course to get the specialization mentioned above, but want to try ice diving. Requirements for participation - to be at least 18 years old and to have the PADI Open Water Diver certification level or equivalent.

Next to the Russian bath, right on the shore, there is a Japanese bath - Ofuro. This is a large wooden barrel full of water that is heated up to 40°C or warmer. Ofuro session is not meant for washing but rather for relaxing and warming oneself. Washing is carried out separately prior to the bath. The water level is usually up to the chest.

Reception

Our front desk managers are ready to provide you with the necessary information, answer all your questions and help to solve the problems in case if any of them arise. You can also buy some souveniers at the Receprion to remember your trip to the White Sea.

Common Living room

There are two common living rooms in the Cottage №1 - one with a fireplace and a large table on the groundfloor, and the second one with two cozy sets of sofas and armchairs on the first floor. We have a moderate book sharing stock, and quite a number of various magazines and board games for our guests to have fun. There is also a digital video projector for watching movies on the big screen in the first floor living room.

Dining area

Common dining area is located on the ground floor of the Cottage №1 in a separate spacios room. It is designed to hold up to 50 persons, if there are more guests, meals are organized in two shifts. More infomation is available in the "Meals" section.

Diving at the "Arctic Circle" Dive Centre is arranged according to PADI standards. Divers are accompanied by experienced instructors and dive guides.

There is a variety of dive sites that can be reached by speedboat. Some of them are not far from the dive centre, others may be a longer distance away (up to 1 hour speedboat trip).

Divers are transported to the dive sites by RIB speedboats, either with a return after the first dive to the dive centre for a break and rest before the second one, or for two dives at once. In the latter case we take lunch with us and spend some time in the wild relaxing between the dives on beautiful beaches, among rocks, pines and mosses.

The pier, where all the diving trips and marine excursions set off, is only three hundred meters away from the guest houses and the main territory of the Dive Centre and Lodge. There are special wooden cabins on the shore next to the pier, equipped for the divers to prepare for the dive, change clothes, desalinate and dry out the equipment. There is also a common room module for comfortable lunch between the dives, and a separate WC-cabin equipped with a chemical toilet.

To take part in a diving program at the Arctic Circle Diving Center, a diver must meet certain requirements. Please read the prerequisites on our website.

To see the list of equipment, recommended for summer diving at the White Sea, please click here.

The guests of "The Arctic Circle", who have no diving experience and certification, may take a course of initial diving training (OWD PADI), go snorkeling or make an introductory dive with the Dive Centre instructors.

Excursions to the reindeer farm and the northern sled dog breeding kennel

We have got a small reindeer farm and a sled dog breeding kennel at our Tourism Centre.

The reindeer is a nice pet that has been living next to people for many centuries. Reindeer are hardy and unpretentious, amiable and obedient. We have got five animals at our farm now.

Northern sled dogs are amazing creatures: both agility and love for people are characteristic for them, they are intelligent and very friendly, and their soft fur and funny "smiles" leave no one indifferent! Visitors of the "Arctic Circle" kennel will meet fine representatives of such northern breeds as alascan malamute (four dogs), alascan husky (two dogs), and three lovely puppies of yakut husky.
